Creating and Managing Categories
For adding category in your admin panel, click Catalog -> Manage Categories. Opt for the store where you want the category to be included from the Choose Store View dropdown menu. Now, you’ll have to enter the name of the category and select category location. By default, there’s the Root Catalog, which means the category is going to be a top-level category. If you opt a current category, the new category will be generated like a sub-category of the one you had chosen.
Whatever that is listed in your category of admin is that will exactly be shown in your front page. You are also provided with the option of hiding categories. You’re also allowed to upload image, insert Meta keywords, Meta description, input page title, etc. You can also add Navigation menu, or set either to set active or not. Magento comes enshrouded with many an interesting feats. One interesting aspect that you can use is to dragging category whether you include it in root category or sub-categories.
Magento also abets you to display your products information in different ways. Let’s have a look at all of them one by one.
Display Products Only – Shows the uploaded image, the products, and their description.
Static Block Only – It shows the static block selected by you, make this page look like a landing page to your customers. This won’t show product in the page.
Static Block & Products – This comes handy when you’ve many category pages where you like the similar content, but sport varied products.
How to do this?
1. Make a static block for the content you wish to utilize among categories.
2. Now get back to categories management, and find your category
3. Choose display mode “Static block and products”
4. Choose the static block created by you in Step 1. The static block will be displayed above the products list.
Magento’s another option is Anchor that allows a user to use layered navigation. It only needs to be set to yes. As soon as it’s set to yes, it’ll be showing the sub-categories of this category in the layered navigation. It’ll offer options of filtering by manufacturer, price, or any other features of the product.
Magento also allows you to customize the design of each category through Custom design. Here you are free to overrule the default behavior of your page. This keeps tabs on the category page structure and the objects that are to be shown in this page.
This setup comes handy if there is not many number of your products, for example thousand or a hundred number of products. Look for the name of the product that you wish to combine with the category. After that, click the product checkboxes so that you can keep control of the position in the listing of category.
In order to create products, click Catalog -> Manage Products
In Attribute Set, choose Default if you’ve not brought about any attribute sets. Plus, you can opt for varied types of products. The types of products comprise: Grouped Product, Simple Product, Virtual Product, Configurable Product, Bundled and Downloadable Product.
Simple Product – It’s utilized for single configuration products. Stock is allocated at a simple product level.
